“I AM NOT BIG BIRD” Movie Review
“I AM NOT BIG BIRD” Movie Review
If you’re looking for a Filipino comedy movie that is not afraid to go balls out, literally and figuratively, and doesn’t go for the usual tropes and jokes then this one's for you and your friends (family if you feel daring)! Offering a wild kind of humor and ride not usually shown in Pinoy cinema, “I Am Not Big Bird!” will definitely leave you laughing hard from the start, leaving you satisfied till the end! Here’s our short review!
Fair warning: Minor spoilers ahead!
The consistency of the theme and humor is the stiffest foundation of the film! From the title down to the last frame of the movie, you could really tell that the whole movie revolves around the male genitalia. It is not just a gimmick thing that will be set aside as soon as the plot peaks which is admirable. Even if most of the punchlines all boil down to what is inside a man’s pants, the movie never skips a beat. Every phallic joke is laughable and easy to swallow for the audience’s amusement. The way that it was also delivered never felt forced, especially when it is delivered by Red Ollero. Yes, the movie didn’t bend too much to the usual Pinoy mainstream comedy tropes, which was refreshing. There are a few of it though it is more to be made fun of, for example how it made fun of how Pinoy teleseryes utilize close-up shots and special effects just to make one scene very intense. Wouldn’t go into too much detail as it is better to see it yourself! There are just some moments though that you feel the movie is playing safe, possible to keep the movie marketable and maintain the R16 rating.
Plot-wise, it’s really a no-brainer. Nothing too grand nor unique. It is no wonder why the movie is quickly compared to Hollywood's Hangover, despite this movie barely having any similarities to the former except that the main characters are friends and the location is Thailand. There are also some parts of the story that feels like it is just dragging and easily skippable, that you would wish that it would just jump to the hilarious and action-y parts. Most evident when reaching the climax of the story. As if the movie was just edging the audience for the sake that the runtime goes a little bit longer, nevertheless we are compensated with a payload that is sorta worth the wait. As expected, it’s the d*ck jokes and gags that kept the film enjoyable, more memorable than what the plot conflict is.
Credits to Enrique Gil for breaking off the mold with this movie, showing us his potential in other genres, especially with something as humorous and spicy as this! Hats off to Red Ollero as well for bringing his stand-up comedy A-game to the fray as each funny line coming off him surely feels like coming off from a friend whose foul-mouthed yet fun to be with!
Overall, “I Am Big Bird” is worth catching in cinemas. Offering a once in a blue bal…moon experience as it shows a different kind of Pinoy comedy where restraints are mostly off, giving us a refreshing take on a kind of humor that you can only joke around with the closest of your peers and not something usually presented and tackled in FIlipino cinemas! It is definitely stuffed with a lot of gags and jokes that will give you and your friends a good time! Oh and they have a lot of Like A Dragon/Yakuza reference too!
We give this film a 3.5/5 score!
